WEEKLY COLUMN

July 10, 2009

This week we are sharing important  and helpful information from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC).

The following are answers to some of their most frequently asked questions, and may be a question you have been wondering about.

Q. How do I change my address?

A. Report a new address within one week after your move.  MVC provides an online service to change your address.

Q.  How many points on my driver license will suspend my driving privileges?

A. Your driving privileges will be suspended if you have 12 or more points on your license.

Q.How do I get a copy of my driving record?

A. You may get a certified copy of your driver history abstract for $15 online, by mail, or in person at local agencies offering walk-in service or a Regional Service Center.

MVC keeps all your driving records in a document known as a driver history abstract. For your convenience, you can now request your abstract online. (Note: a credit card convenience fee will be applied in order to process each online transaction).

Learn how to read a driver history by downloading a helpful brochure, Understanding Your Driver Abstract.  This brochure, and other information such as the location of Regional Service Centers for the Motor Vehicle Commission, can be accessed at www.state.nj.us/mvc/Licenses/DriverHistory.htm

You may also request your abstract by mail:  NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, Abstract Unit, 225 East State Sttreet, PO Box 142, Trenton, NJ 08666-0142.

Your driver history abstract will be mailed to you within 5 business days of receipt of your completed form and payment.

Q.How do I obtain a set of replacement license plates?

A.You may go to any Motor Vehicle Commission agency to get a pair of non-personalized replacements for standard license plates.  Single plates are not available.

You must show your current registration, complete the required form (BA-49), and pay a fee of $6 for standard plates or $11 for non-personalized specialty plates.  These plates will carry new numbers and letters and are accompanied with a new replacement plate registration.

Q.How do I get a set of replacement plates exactly like the old ones?

A. You can get a pair of identical license plates specially made if they are reflectorized for $11.  “Amateur Radio Operator” plates cost $15 to replace.

Call 888-486-3339 (toll free in New Jersey) or 609-292-6500 from 8:30 am-4:15 pm weekdays.  Complete the form and mail with the required fee to NJ Motor Vehicles, Special Plate Unit, PO Box 015, Trenton, NJ 08666-0015.

Q. How do I obtain a license plate or placard for a person with a temporary loss of mobility?

A. A motorist who has temporarily lost mobility (and is medically certified) can obtain a temporary placard from their local police department for a  $4 fee.  The placard is valid for six months and may be renewed only once.

Q. How do I obtain a license plate or placard for a person with a medically certified permanent loss of mobility?

A. A person with a certified permanent loss of mobility is entitled to a license plate or placard free of charge.

Visit a Motor Vehicle Agency to get an application or call  888-486-3339 (toll free in New Jersey) or 609-292-6500 from 8:30 am-4:15 weekdays.

You will be mailed a placard and a handicapped ID card.

Placards must be renewed every three years (no fee)--you will be automatically mailed the renewal form.

If you do not receive your renewal form in the mail, you can get one from a Motor Vehicle Agency or call 888-486-3339 toll free in New Jersey or 609-292-6500 from 8:30 am-4:15 pm weekdays and mail the form to:

To replace a placard, complete the application (ISM/SP-41) and present it with your handicapped ID card at an Agency or mail the application and ID to the previously cited address.

Q.How do I obtain a duplicate or family registration ?

A. You may obtain a duplicate or family registration at any Motor Vehicle Commission Agency .  The fee for a duplicate or family registration is $5.

Q. Why don’t I receive a registration renewal application in the mail for my leased vehicle?

A.  Renewal applications are mailed to the owner of the vehicle.  The owner of a leased vehicle is the leasing company.  The renewal application is mailed directly to them approximately 60 days prior to the expiration of the current registration.  Your leasing company should mail you the renewal application properly stamped and signed by a company officer. Contact your leasing company if you do not receive your application.
